Garbage dump in rainy season: haunting smell – health and environmental hazard

EnviroHub
13/08/2025

When the rainy season comes, the stench from leachate collection points is not only unpleasant; it is also a direct threat to the health of people living around the area, with the risk of spreading disease and causing serious environmental damage.

Current situation:

In many localities, especially densely populated urban areas, garbage collection points in the rainy season become "hot spots" for foul odors. The high amount of leachate along with unstable humidity and temperature makes the decomposition process faster but less effective, creating toxic gases such as H₂S, ammonia or corrosive substances

Health and environmental risks:
According to experts, people exposed to this environment for a long time are susceptible to serious diseases: respiratory infections, skin infections, eye - nose - throat irritation, and increased psychological stress. In particular, the elderly, children and people with chronic diseases are the most vulnerable. Insects such as flies, mosquitoes, and rats from garbage are also pathogens that cause dengue fever, plague, and diarrhea

Widespread effects: Leachate and pollution spread:
Some old open-air landfills do not have a leachate collection system, causing waste-containing water to overflow into ditches, streams, and even the sea. A typical example is the Ru Ri landfill (Nha Trang City): every time it rains, the leachate is black and has a strong odor, flowing into residential areas and into the sea, affecting aquaculture and people's lives. Although the government has used lime powder and temporary microbiological measures to control odors, they are only temporary

Temporary and long-term odor control solutions:
Temporary technical solutions: Water injection and tarpaulin covering are temporary measures to limit odors and reduce leachate generation. Sustainable solutions are needed: Investing in a leachate collection and treatment system, upgrading the bottom layer of the landfill with HDPE lining and increasing collection to treatment stations like in Nha Trang are necessary steps to prevent odors and leachate from spreading

Conclusion: Call for action:
The foul odor from landfills in the rainy season is not only an odor “problem” but also a warning bell for public health and the environment. There needs to be cooperation between the government, the community and environmental experts to build an effective leachate and odor treatment model - not only timely but also sustainable.
