On August 11, 2022, the Business Incubator Network, in conjunction with the Global Plastic Action Partnership, the World Economic Forum's UpLink Innovation Platform and the Plastic Waste Alliance, officially announced the top 5 innovators of the Southeast Asia Plastic Waste Recycling Challenge who will participate in a development program tailored for each project for about 5 months. Plastic People is the only Vietnamese representative in the Top 5 best innovators. The Southeast Asia Plastic Recycling Challenge was launched to address the issue of plastic waste management in the region. The initiative was designed to accelerate plastic recycling and reuse solutions in Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. Selected innovators will have the opportunity to expand partnerships, receive expert mentoring, increase community outreach, join networks and receive financial support to scale up their solutions. Solutions will be evaluated based on their contribution to at least one of three focus areas: increasing the amount of plastic waste managed, treated or recycled; supporting improvements in plastic waste management and recycling; and improving working conditions for businesses in plastic waste management and recycling. The plastic waste pollution crisis is posing an urgent need for sustainable treatment solutions. From 2017 to 2019, an estimated 2 million tons of plastic waste were generated each year from Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, accounting for 17% of global plastic waste. Plastic waste is often discharged into water sources, burned or released into the environment, threatening the environment and biodiversity. Mr. Nicholas Kolesc, Vice President of Projects at the Plastic Waste Alliance, said that plastic waste treatment is an urgent need because failure to act promptly will cause serious economic and environmental damage. With the increasing demand for recycled plastic, the Southeast Asia plastic waste recycling challenge will support businesses in the region to meet this demand, helping to remove plastic from the environment and return it to the circular economy. According to experts, innovative solutions play a very important role in solving plastic waste in the region. The solutions will help speed up the recycling process of plastic waste locally and minimize the mismanagement of plastic waste.
